it’s not a vacation until i’ve made them learn something

One day of the big anniversary (my in-laws’, not mine) getaway was spent at Cades Cove at the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Breaking news: We saw a bear. A real black bear in its natural habitat. His name was not Yogi, as far as I know.

More breaking news: I don’t have a photo of said bear because I was in a car and without a zoom lens. I know: “Pictures or it didn’t happen.” My father-in-law has some. I will update after I pilfer a jpeg.

In addition to historic settlements that you can walk to and enter, Cades Cove has an 11-mile, one-way loop that runs through the wilderness of the Tennessee mountains. It gives visitors the opportunity to roll down the windows and watch the wildlife from the comfort of a combustion engine vehicle. You know, just like the settlers.
